You air conditioner can seem like your best friend on a sweltering day in the middle of the summer. If it is not working correctly, it can make life miserable in a very short time as your home heats up. One symptom of failure that you might notice from your air conditioner is a hissing sound. This doesn't always mean there is something wrong, but it could. It is a good idea to know the possible sources of this hissing sound when it happens.

The most serious problem that may cause a hissing sound to emit from the air conditioner is too much internal pressure in the compressor. This can range from a mild hissing noise to a loud hissing or a noise some describe as a "scream.

If your compressor is making this type of noise, shut down the air conditioner and call a qualified technician to repair the problem. A similar but usually quieter hissing sound can come from the compressor area in an air conditioning unit if the internal valves are leaking. This hissing may sometimes take on the sound of a trumpet or trombone if the condition worsens.

The noise caused by leaky valves is especially noticeable when the system powers down. A service technician will be required to replace or repair the leaking parts. Sometimes a hissing sound coming from the air conditioner is not a major problem.

During normal operation the refrigerant, such a Freon, circulates through a system of pipes to cool the system. It compresses the gas and then expands the gas rapidly through a port called an expansion valve. In some systems the expansion of gas inside the unit will make an audible hissing noise routinely as part of the cooling process. They are not a cause for concern. Where did you find inspiration for recreating these experiences from a sound standpoint? He wanted the sound to feel immersive, tactile to fit how close-up things will be shotand also have moments where sound meets music. He started by showing us some animatics he put together during pre-production and those included some of the sounds that he and researcher Peter Dowd had done.

We also captured the sonic booms of the Falcon Heavy re-entering the atmosphere. We were able to repurpose that and use it in the X sequence in the film. We used those sounds throughout the film for things like the thrusters, and air releases from the rocket fueling process. Because the launch sequences were visually shot in such a tight angle, we wanted to have really intense turbulence shakes.

They needed to have a tight and close feeling.

Air Leak Sounds

Sound effects recordist John Fasal, Milly, and I went out to record motion simulator rides, and that worked well especially when they injected low frequency tones to vibrate the entire vehicle.

We wanted to be as authentic as we could and yet sometimes we wanted to play up the emotional punch. So sometimes we would morph into something that was surreal and surprising, like an animal roar or a howl bursting out from the explosions and the metal groans.

In terms of research, I wanted to be familiar with the comms. Online, you can access all the comms from all the NASA missions. In the movie, we used all the authentic comms from the period but then we also had to supplement those with other comms that we had to record on an ADR stage. We had to get the tone right. We had to get the rhythm of it right. We also had to be familiar with the newscasts from that period because we used Walter Cronkite but we also had to create some newscasts as well.Besides being annoying to listen to, hissing sounds emanating from water pipes are signs of water leaks.

Find the location of the sound and repair the pipes as needed to avoid flushing what could be thousands of gallons of water downstream.

Water pipes that make a hiss or whoosh sound are indicative of water leaks. Listening for such sounds is the best way to determine if pipes are leaking. The hissing can sound like constant static noise and is the only type of sound you will hear when dealing with pipes featuring 30 psi or higher water pressure. Other water leak sounds, such as splashing, beating, thumping or clinking, may accompany hissing and whooshing sounds depending on pipe material and other factors, though they are usually not as loud.

Numerous factors influence hissing and other sounds of leaking water pipes, such as the water pressure inside a pipe. Other factors include the type of pipe material used. For example, metal pipes, such as those made from iron, steel or copper, all create louder, higher-frequency noises than do pipes made of PVC or asbestos. Pipe diameter is another consideration because smaller pipes result in louder sounds than do larger pipes.

The kind of soil used over piping and how well it is compacted are also factors. Sandy and very loose soils do not transmit sound well, particularly if over newly buried pipelines. High-moisture soils, such as those in swamps, transmit sound poorly. Hard, compacted soil transmits sound the best.

Whether the pipe is buried under grass, asphalt, loose dirt or concrete slab is the final factor. Grass and dirt feature surface variations that make sound transmission difficult, while concrete and asphalt provide surfaces for sound that resonate well.

Pinpointing the hissing sound for repair requires finding the location of the pipes on the street with a pipe and cable locator and then marking the location.

The sound is generally loudest in piping between the valve or hydrant. It is the second-loudest section of line you must mark, however. Use a ground microphone to locate this spot exactly. Hire a professional to fix or replace the piping if needed. It is important to fix water leaks for water conservation purposes. A leaking toilet can use as much as 90, gallons of water in a month. Watch for leaks by being aware of the signs and symptoms of leaky pipes, and wrap exposed pipes during cold weather to avoid breakage.
